DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - There is not one, but two new peanut statues in town. The Dothan City School Board of Education unveiled the latest statues on Thursday, Oct. 22.

They could not go without a name though. All Dothan City Schools submitted a name and the community voted on their favorite name for the statues. There is Penelope the Pre-K Peanut, named by Carver School for Math and Science. And “ED”ucation the Senior Peanut, named by Heard Elementary .

Superintendent Dennis Coe said this is a tribute to the city, the importance of the peanut in this area and to recognize and honor the school system.

“We talked about this over a year ago and planning, and you know as the peanut capital of the world we needed to be represented as a school system," Coe said. "So you know to be on the trail now and to be apart of that certainly helps the school system, and it’s all about building morale and building community and the turnout today is certainly encouraging, from our community members and the support we are getting from the other leaders is just tremendous.”

The statues are located right outside of the Dothan City Board of Education.
