DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - The election is 20 days away and voters are thinking of their election day plans, but for some voters it is a challenge to get to the polls.

To ease that challenge, the League of Women voters of Southeast Alabama received a Lyft grant to provide free rides for voters in the city of Dothan.

“Ride to Vote” will become available tomorrow, Oct. 15th. Voters will receive a $30 voucher ($15 each way) to cover the expense of a ride to go vote and return back home. Free ride codes are limited, so they are only available while supplies lasts.

They are to be used strictly for voting. A voter can use it for in person absentee voting or to go to the polls on election day.

The LWV of SEAL were one of 11 organizations to receive this nationwide grant.

“When we’re out interacting with voters, one of the biggest challenges we find when we suggest to people to get a ride and go vote in person absentee they say ‘Well I don’t have a ride,’ or some of the older folks say ‘Well I don’t drive,’" Stephanie Butler, Chair of League of Women Voters of Southeast Alabama, said. "Transportation can be a really big challenge for seniors and people who are lower income. so to be able to provide this free opportunity to give people options for how to vote is really important so they can vote safely in person absentee before election day or they can get themselves a ride to the polls on November third.”

In-person absentee voting begins October 15th and lasts through October 29th. Election Day to vote at the polls is Tuesday, November 3rd.
