DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - The Wiregrass Museum of Art is gearing up for their annual “First Saturday Family Day," but it remains virtual. Over the last few months COVID-19 has forced the museum to transition one of their longest running programs to online. Typically, every first Saturday of the month families and kids of all ages would fill the studio to create pieces of art, but recently they have had to complete it in their homes.

This is still a free event, families can tune into the WMA Facebook page from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. WMA posts a series of activities during that timeframe; there will be a total of three. For busy families, they can be completed even after the event is over.

The museums goal is to have kids get hands on art to create things out of what they have around them.

Communications manage, Lara Kosolapoff-Wright said they miss the families filling the studio in person but she manages to find a positive, WMA can reach a larger audience with the event being virtual.

“People can tune in as their able and they can revisit these activities throughout the day,” Kosolapoff-Wright said. "If they can’t do it from 10 to 2 then they can do it later in the afternoon or on Sunday or whenever they have time. So I think we definitely do miss seeing people in person, but until we can all gather safely again in large groups then I think this is a great alternative.”

This week families will create an abstract landscape painting reflecting the museums upcoming exhibit featuring Sarah Garden Armstrong’s pieces.
