COFFEE COUNTY, Ala. (WTVY) --

Coffee County EMA is looking for churches to serve as pre-event storm shelters.

They are hoping to have three or four locations in different parts of the county for the program.

EMA is also asking for volunteers to man the shelters.

Because of COVID-19, they need more safer spaces for residents in mobile or manufactured homes.

As of right now, Enterprise High School is the only pre-event storm shelter in Coffee County.

“We don’t have enough room to put everybody that we would have put into this shelter. During Hurricance Michael, we sheltered 88 people and because we need about 100 square foot per person, we don’t have enough room there anymore.”

Coffee County EMA hopes to have a plan in place by the end of July in time for peak hurricane season.
