Dothan Family Back to School Tradition During Covid
DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -One Dothan mom is excited her kid is finally back in school after a long summer in quarantine. They shared their unique way of starting the new year.
The Simmons have been taking a back to school picture for a few years now.
Paula Simmons said, “Of course we had to integrate the Coronavirus in this one.”
The pictures have gotten more intricate.
“Each year it’s becoming a little more hectic to try to pick an idea for a picture so hazmat suit and I was trying to figure out social distance because I’m always trying to integrate the parents having a party because their kids are going back to school.”
The pressure was on to come up with a creative picture for this year.
Paula’s daughter Kaitlin Simmons said, “She stresses me out about these photos because she start like a month before and shes like we’ve got to come up with something to do or this years gonna be a bummer.”
Today was Kaitlin’s first day at Dothan Prep and both mom and daughter were pleased with the new norms.
“I feel like Dothan City has done a good job of trying to keep the kids safe. We really don’t know what the year has to hold but we’re feeling good about it,” Paula said.
Kaitlin said wearing a mask for that long got tiring but knew its what she had to do.
“Some kids don’t stay six feet apart so I have to tell them to back up but they do pretty good,” Kaitlin said.
Even though Paula didn’t end up celebrating her daughters first day that morning, it doesn’t mean a celebration isn’t still to come.
Paula said, “After the six month that we’ve had with the six months that we’ve had with them being at home a zoom meeting with parents and celebrating sounds pretty good.”
The two plan to continue the tradition for years to come.
