Geneva administrator arrested on drug charges resigns
GENEVA, Ala. (WTVY) - Geneva High School Principal Dr. Kary Roberts has resigned from her post with the school system.
Geneva City Schools Superintendent Ron Snell confirmed the news this afternoon.
Roberts was hired at the school after the longtime principal retired at the end of the last school year. She had served as an assistant principal at Dothan High School last year. The DHS website said she was the 10th grade administrator.
A Headland police officer pulled over Roberts vehicle along U.S. 431 about 4 o’clock on Monday afternoon. “He observed her texting and driving,” Headland Police Chief Mark Jones told WTVY.
After a roadside investigation, Roberts was charged with Possession of Marijuana Second Degree and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, both misdemeanors.
She also faces one count of having an open container of alcohol in her vehicle but a sobriety test showed Roberts below the legal limit of intoxication.
Roberts had been placed on administrative leave once the school was made aware of the arrest.
Geneva Superintendent Ron Snell issued the following statement:
“The Geneva City Board of Education has formally accepted the resignation of Dr. Kary Roberts effective immediately. The system will post the job opening and begin the search for the next leader of Geneva High School. Working for Geneva City Schools is a privilege that carries with it enormous expectations. We will look for and find a leader who will exceed those expectations, someone who will serve this great community and its excellent students.”
