DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -Dothan sales tax collections are sizzling despite the pandemic. The news, though, is not all good because lodging taxes continue to suffer.

A report issued Wednesday by the city of Dothan shows, in August, the city collected $6,160,158 in sales taxes. That’s almost $800,000 more than budget and a slightly better than had been collected in August, 2019.

Lodging taxes, compared to last year, were down about $106,000, or 31 percent, in August as the hospitality industry nationwide struggles to recover from a travel downturn caused by the pandemic.

About $2.3-million in automotive sales taxes were collected during the month, on par with August, 2019.

August figures represent taxes collected by merchants in July.
