DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -

James Coachman won two state championships as a Cottonwood bear his senior year in 1987, but he’s now feeling like a winner more than ever after the town of Cottonwood picked him as its next mayor.

Coachman faced Garrett Lorton for the seat to lead the town and came out on top with 153 votes compared to Lorton’s 29.

Coachman says the first step he will take as mayor is beautifying the town, he grew up in.

“I thank everyone from cottonwood that voted for me and participated in this election. God makes miracles. I was at this from a little bitty child where I wanting to help youngster and people who couldn’t do for themselves,” says Lorton.

Coachman will serve as mayor starting November 2nd and promises we’ll all see some changes soon after.
