City Officials, Volunteers prepare for “Love Your Neighborhood” cleanup event
DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - In an effort to revitalize parts of Dothan, the “Love Dothan” campaign is kicking off a neighborhood cleanup project this weekend.
“What we want to do is make sure all the neighborhoods in Dothan know that we care about them and we care about their appearance,” Assistant City Manager Randy Morris said.
More than 100 volunteers are expected to take part in the Love Your Neighborhood Clean-up event.
“We’ve had a lot of organizations and church groups that have shown the want to help out with this,” Morris said.
The campaign is designed to help improve parts of the city that are facing declining conditions. The Baptist Bottom neighborhood near Aunt Katie’s Community Garden has been chosen as the starting point.
Morris says city workers have already begun improving city owned properties in the area.
“We’ve been edging sidewalks, cutting along the right of ways, cut any lots that we own, as well as painting fire hyrdrants. We’re changing out the street lights to LED’s,” Morris said.
So far, about 23 residents have called in asking for additional help from volunteers.
“Whether its’ trimming trees or cleaning hedge rows, or cutting grass or if they have old appliances or anything like that and they want to dispose of, we’ll have the volunteers come, they’ll do whatever pruning, bring those items back to the road and our environmental service crews are going to come by and haul them off for them,” Morris said.
Morris says the response from volunteers wanting to help has been overwhelming.
“We’ll be cleaning stop signs, and repainting any kind of striping that needs to be done, as well as replacing broken curbs and sidewalks,” Morris said.
The cleanup project will run from 8 AM to noon on Saturday. All volunteers are welcome.
City leaders are planning to choose other Dothan neighborhoods for improvements in the coming months.
