Wiregrass Two-A-Days: New Brockton Gamecocks
NEW BROCKTON, Ala. (WTVY) - New Brockton has been a team of consistency down here in the Wiregrass. Since 2008, the Gamecocks have reached the playoffs ten times including last year under first year head coach Zack Holmes.
It was a sluggish start to the year with three straight losses, but New Brockton was able to hit its stride around October closing out the regular season with three wins in its last four games.
As the Gamecocks get ready for the jump to class 3A this year, they are aiming for another berth in the playoffs, but Holmes is wanting more than just a first round exit.
“We’ve been on a pretty good streak of making the playoffs every year,” said Holmes. “That’s obviously goal one, but the next goal for the program is to become a team that wins playoff games. I think over the last ten years, our program has only won one playoff game but been there. Our goal now is to get over the hump of that and win a playoff game. Obviously you do that by finishing better in the region so that first round game if it’s at your place, it makes it a lot easier to win and also being able to go on the road and have that play anywhere, anytime mentality.”
The Gamecocks begin the 2020 season against the Cottonwood Bears.
