Local food bank receives large donation of eggs
DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - Cal-Maine foods incorporated donated tens of thousands of eggs to several food banks across the state.
“We had a real generous donation of 23,400 dozen eggs that were donated so we spent the last two or three weeks contacting food banks and figuring out how to distribute so people in Alabama that are most in need would get it,”says Rick Pate - Commissioner of Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries
Dothan was on that list.
They received about 900 dozen eggs equaling to 10 thousand and 800 hundred eggs total.
The truck load helps the food bank continue to serve the community.
“Well first off food banks depend on donations without donations we wouldn’t have any food to distribute,” David Hanks - Director of Wiregrass Area Food Bank
Despite the egg-cellent donation, the food bank knows it won’t take long to find people who need help.
“We will make sure that gets out and it will probably be distributed in the next two weeks,” Hanks says
Food bank officials say this will be one item that community members will truly enjoy.
“Talking about the egg everybody knows how prepare an egg it is probably one of the most nutritious meals out there and you can prepare it so many different ways so i know our clients that utilize the food bank are going to be thrilled to get fresh eggs it is something we don’t get on a regular basis so that makes it even more special,” says Hanks.
The Wiregrass area food bank distributes meals through their mobile pantry and through other agencies and churches.
