LOJO reels in viewers with YouTube channel
DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -
With just a fishing rod and a GoPro, one Dothan man has turned a hobby into a career. Creating a YouTube channel filled with videos of some of the craziest fishing adventures.
Loren is casting out his line but he’s reeling in more than just fish, getting over 100,000 views on his YouTube videos. A simple birthday present from his wife was the key in “hooking” Johnson’s career.
“I would come home and tell my wife and she didn’t believe me a lot of the time because alligators would be involved, beavers, crazy fish catches. One day for my birthday she bought me my first go pro. She was like why don’t you start going to record some of these adventures, that way you can actually show me when you come home and that’s exactly what I did. I started recording stuff with no intention of making a YouTube channel, just collecting my own footage,” Loren “LOJO” Johnson said.
But fishing hasn’t always been LOJO’s passion, serving in the military for 6 years, spending 2 years in Afghanistan and receiving a degree from Wallace in physical therapy.
“One day it just got to the point where I believed in what I was doing on YouTube and I was like you know what I’m going to dive in head first and see what happens and luckily it’s worked out for me,” Johnson said.
Since his first video in 2016, LOJO’s fan base has grown to over 328 thousand subscribers. Capturing his craziest moments.
“Some alligator encounters, more than one in kayaks, bank fishing, trying to steal my fish, I’ve caught huge fish of all kinds, just monster bass. Just stuff you would never believe if there was not a camera there,” Johnson said.
He credits all to his genuine personality.
“Be yourself, be as genuine as you possibly can because the audience is going to be able to tell if you’re faking it or trying to be somebody that you’re not so that’s just me. When I hook into a tiny fish I get just as excited as my personal best fish so I don’t know why I am that way. But if I mean hey if it’s working for people, it works for me so, hey lets go,” Johnson said.
Recently becoming a member of the Googan Squad, a group made up of 7 YouTuber’s. Johnson hopes to keep expanding as he continues to do what he loves.
“To be able to do this for a while, it’s a great job, its a dream job, I’m doing what I love, I’m my own boss. You can’t complain about that. I can provide for my family, it’s a great balance that we have right now. So my goal is to just keep this going for as long as I can but hey 3 to 5 years of doing this, I’ll take that over any job out there,” Johnson said.
Posting 5 to 6 videos a week, LOJO is gaining over 1500 subscribers everyday.
