DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - Since corona virus testing became available patients have had to wait days to get their results, but now a local urgent care facility is offering testing with a device that shares results in minutes. All South Urgent Care offers the Sofia 2 SARS Antigen FIA testing which not only shares same day results but results as quick as 15 minutes.

Dr. Beth Weaver said this new testing is more convenient for patients.

“It’s been especially helpful for patients who have had a positive test because it lets them notify their employers, lets them make their vacation plans and it helps them in those ways,” Dr. Weaver said.

The testing is still a nasal swab, but Dr. Weaver said it is not unbearable because it is in the interior of the nose and does not go back as far as the previous tests, the nasal frangible swab. Instead of having to send tests off to get results nurses and doctors can share them with patients within their own facility.

“The more recent testing that is not FDA approved but has been approved for emergency use right now is antigen testing which tests for the antigen for the virus itself in the nasal track,” said Dr. Weaver.

The urgent care has had a rapid increase in testing patients. As a result the their percentage of positive cases in patients has doubled. On Monday, June 29 The facility had 40 positive corona virus cases from patients in and out of the state.

Many of the virus symptoms overlap with common viral illnesses, Dr. Weaver said.

“The most common that we see is extreme fatigue, achiness, maybe headache, sometimes without any fever but there also seem to be more and more cases that involve GI symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea and I’ve read some recent cases involving even rashes,” Dr. Weaver said.

15 percent of tests can test negative so even if a patient has tested negative for COVID-19 but is symptomatic Dr. Weaver encourages them stay home.

“Even if our test is negative and you are having symptoms you need to quarantine, you still need to stay away from people.” Dr. Weaver said. “You may not have a serious illness, the next person you see may not have a serious illness, but they may affect people who could be seriously affected by it.”

Test results may come back faster but with the increase of patients being tested it is important to keep in mind that it is still a 15-minute testing process. This can be time consuming with many patients.

If you feel you are experiencing any of the corona virus symptoms Dr. Weaver advises you to get tested and quarantine.
