DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - The Bay County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a new scam.

Rental scams are common this time of year, but one scam right now is targeting people headed on vacation to panhandle beaches. People can lose thousands of dollars if they are not careful when it comes to renting property.

A rental scam can involve a victim sending money to rent a property advertised for short or long-term. The owner advertises their home for rent and is unaware a scammer is using it to get money.

A few signs to look out for in a scam include the person of interest not wanting to meet in person, the price being “too good to be true,” the owner requests money to be sent by wire or mail and there is no screening process.

Scam listings are also likely to have typos, poor grammar and excessive punctuation.

If you have been victimized by a scammer, please file a report by contacting the bay county sheriff’s office or your law enforcement agency.
