BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG) -

Florida has one of the highest coronavirus counts in the nation, and even though Bay County’s 3 percent positive testing rate is half the state’s average, health experts say we’re also seeing a rise in our area.

Officials with the Florida Department of Health in Bay County say within the past month, 110 people tested positive for COVID-19 in Bay County and 13 have been hospitalized. Officials say that brings the overall total to 205 positive cases in Bay County with 195 being residents.

When Phase One of reopening the state began on May 4, there were 76 cases in the county. During the last week of May there were around 97 cases.

Officials say they’re seeing a rising trend in younger people, especially those between 25 and 34. The 45 to 54 age group also has a high number of cases in our area.

There have been 25 hospitalizations in our area, and officials with local hospitals say they have surge plans in place to increase the number of beds in the intensive care units if needed.

Ninety-seven percent of the nearly 6,500 tests in our area were negative, and 2 percent of all positive cases proved fatal.
