Matt was born in Fairfax, Virginia and grew up in Centreville. He lived just 25 miles outside of our Nation’s Capital, an experience he cherishes. Both of his parents are educators. His Mom, Susan, is a special education teacher and his father, also Matt, is a Principal. He says he wouldn’t be where he is today if it weren’t for the love of his parents. He also has a little sister, Caroline, who will be 12 years old in May. He calls her “smurf” but joking aside he is a proud big brother and says she is his princess.
He worked all four years in sports television, print and radio while attending the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. Matt was sports anchor/reporter for Teal TV, the campus television station, at UNCW. He also wrote a sports column in the student newspaper titled “Sit-downs-with-Sweeney” (Sweeney’s his middle name.) He worked as a field reporter for “UNCW Sports Extra” for 10 episodes which aired on ESPN2 regionally. In radio, he hosted his own weekly sports talk radio show called “The Seahawk Sports Show.” In 2010 Matt graduated from UNCW earning a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies with a minor in Spanish. He is a proud Seahawk!
Following his undergraduate career Matt pursued a master’s degree at Syracuse University. He earned tremendous experience while there and jokes about how much snow they got during his one year there. While completing his degree Matt interned in a top 10 market, at WRC-TV the NBC station of his home market in Washington D.C.
He completed his degree by working in the sports department of USA Today in McLean, Virginia. While there he covered Derek Jeter’s 3,000th hit and the U.S. Women’s Soccer team during the 2011 World Cup among other things. He graduated from Syracuse in August 2011 with a Master of Science in Broadcast and Digital Journalism.
Before coming to Dothan Matt was working with Koubaroulis LLC/The Washington Post as a video producer, reporter and play-by-play announcer. He covered some of the top basketball players, teams and games in the Northern Virginia, Washington D.C. and Maryland area.
Matt has been pursuing a career in sports broadcasting since before he can remember. He loves his family and close friends more than anything and believes he wouldn’t be here were it not for their support and encouragement over the years. He is a dog-lover and has a Cairn terrier named Gunner. When he’s not working Matt enjoys playing basketball (his true love) and golf, travelling, watching movies and spending time with family and friends.
