DOTHAN, Al. (WTVY) — Willie’s Place is your one stop for all things Caribbean cuisine in Dothan.
It’s owned by Willie Rivera, he is from Puerto Rico and still has family on the island.
He says, "There are so many neighborhoods that were affected by the hurricane"
For weeks, he has been collecting food and water to send back after Hurricane Maria devastated the area.
He says those items should arrive in a few days but now, he’s still asking for food and water but also for lumber.
"I want to put some roofs on a few houses. We might be able to do 2 houses or maybe 10. You have children, people who are elderly, they will need that help"
Much of Puerto Rico is still without power and water.
Thursday, President Trump held a press conference with the governor of Puerto Rico to update relief efforts.
Trump says, "Governor, how do you think we have done?"
Governor Rosselló says, "You responded very well, sir."
Willie says, there is still more that can be done.
"It's not that we are trying to help all of Puerto Rico but if we can help just a few families, we will make those families happy."
If you can donate, just bring the items to Willie’s Place on South Oates Street in Dothan.
