Ways to keep your property safe over the holidays

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - Coming as no surprise, crime trends are typically higher during the holidays, specifically between Thanksgiving and New Years.

When doing your holiday shopping, planning and traveling, be sure to keep these things in mind:

Leave lights, radio or TV on.
Contact close, trusted neighbors before leaving so someone can keep an eye out for your property.
Be sure alarm systems are armed and activated before departure.
Be sure all yard gates are locked and closed properly.

“If you get expensive items, a lot of people get new TV’s, computers stuff like that.. don’t put the trash the boxes of those items out by the road. It would be better to cut them up, place them in trash bags.. put them inside of your trash can. That way its not an invitation for somebody who wishes to come find your property and take it from you.” -- Investigator Christoper Thompson, Dothan Police Department
