Spring is snake season. Watch your step!

DOTHAN. Ala. (WTVY) -- Many snakes aren’t out in the winter due to the cold weather but they do come out for food and water in the spring.

Professionals say snakes eat birds and squirrels so they may be attracted to your property if you have feeders in your yard."

In Alabama there are more than 50 species and sub-species of snakes and only six are venomous.

So the chances of seeing a poisonous snake is slim.

Some common snakes you might see include the gray rat snake, corn snake, and black racers. They're all harmless.

Even if you're not a fan of snakes, they do serve a purpose, like keeping the rat and mice populations in check.
