DOTHAN, Al. (WTVY) Sheriff's office investigator Ricky Herring announced he's seeking election to the county commission.
He'll oppose incumbent district three commissioner Jackie Battles in next year's republican primary.
Herring is a veteran law enforcement officer and has lived all his life in Houston County.
His first priority is making sure the people's voice is heard at the government level.
Herring says if victorious, he'll remain a deputy sheriff.
He says, "Some might ask, can I run for commission and still work for the sheriff’s office. The answer is yes. There are other examples in the state of Alabama where a sheriff’s officer has run for county commission."
The primary is in June with the general election in November.
While Battles, the incumbent, is expected to seek re-election there are no democratic candidates at this time.
