Raising awareness for an important cause through a purple purse

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - One in four women are victims of domestic violence. Thursday, nearly 200 people gathered at Bella's Restaurant in downtown Dothan to raise awareness through the Purple Purse challenge.

While most people think of physical abuse when they consider domestic violence, financial abuse occurs in 99% of all cases. The Allstate Foundation's Purple Purse is bringing financial abuse out of the shadows and using financial empowerment to break the cycle.

Germaine Johnson says it doesn't only affect adults. Around 3,000,000 children are affected every year.

"It increases the chances of a little boy growing up to be an abuser or a little girl becoming a victim of violence. Me being a father, I wanted to take control and spread awareness,” replied Johnson.

$500.00 was donated from sponsors and given to the House of Ruth and The Exchange Center.
