Puppy mill birds officially donated to Ohio zoo

DOTHAN, Al. (WTVY) — A group of exotic birds that were rescued from a Dothan puppy mill earlier this year have now been officially donated to a zoo in Ohio.

Dothan city commissioners approved giving away the 16 birds at their meeting on Tuesday.

The macaws are already living in their new home at the Columbus Zoo in Ohio.

Big Bend Animal Rescue in Level Plains had been rehabilitating the exotic birds for the past 7 months.

Dothan police chief Steve Parrish says, "The birds came a long way, many of you saw the pictures on Facebook, many of them didn't have any feathers so good job to Big Bend Animal Rescue in Level Plains, they did an excellent job."

The zoo made a $5,000 donation towards a new Dothan animal shelter.
