Huckabee announced his support for Dawson on the "Rick and Bubba" radio program. Dawson has been a regular guest on the program and announced his candidacy on the show.

"Scott Dawson brings the right heart to the job and I am thrilled to be with him," said Huckabee, who carried Alabama during the 2008 Republican primary for president.

Huckabee has known Dawson for more than a decade, according to a news release from Dawson's campaign. "I think being a pastor is the greatest preparation a person can have for public service," Huckabee said.

Dawson thanked Huckabee for standing behind his candidacy.

The primary is June 5.
