Authorities knew of an impending storm but had no idea that the storm, which packed winds of over 100 mph, was of hurricane magnitude.

As a result, there were no evacuation procedures instituted and very few precautions were taken against the storm.

With over 8 inches of rain and wind blowing gusts over 100 M.P.H. more than 600 people perished when the storm hit.

Some of the deceased were never found, as authorities believe people were swept away by the storm surge.
