A new pilot program in Maryland is testing the idea.

Over the next few months, about 400 Maryland Transportation employees and their families will be given digital ID's to use at a handful of businesses.

It's a two year pilot project, so there's time to do more testing after the first round this Summer.

Officials say the digital driver's licenses are actually more secure because users can show only certain things on the license rather than all the Details that are printed on a regular one.
