Highland's celebrates new learning garden

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - Taking the classroom outside can be therapeutic for a child and a great excuse to get some fresh air!

It was a big day for Highland's Elementary fifth grader Brenna Pfister. She is a member of the Student Government Association and an even prouder student in the school's new learning garden.

"Having outdoor time gives us a new environment,” said Pfister. “We can study science and the plants."

The Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce, parents, students and faculty celebrated the garden Friday afternoon. Principal Vicki Davis says this would have been impossible without the help of her PTO.

"I brought a group of kindergarteners out yesterday and they were elated! You would have thought that I took them to Disney Land because they kept oohing and ahhing.”

"I love the flowers, because they just bring out the green and the colors,” said fifth grade student Nova Tran.

But it's more than a place for these kids to get their hands dirty, it's a place they can come and relax and enjoy the fresh air.

"I love all the nature here. It is calm and peaceful,” added Pfister.
"It's a very safe place for the kids, we have it fenced in. The kids can come out and enjoy a reading, science or math lesson. There are just many things they can do out here,” added Davis.

The students are also growing oranges in their garden that they plan to eat once they’re fully grown.
