DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - The G.W. Carver Museum in Downtown Dothan kicked off Black History Month Thursday morning.

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of black people in U.S. history.

"I think that when you are looking at a political climate like what we have right now with the tension.. a lot of peoples reaction is lets talk, lets talk through these tough things, and I think there is a lot of truth to that.. we do need to do a lot of talking, however I think that celebrating is a big component, and when you're able to celebrate your neighbor, and celebrate your differences, you can really make it through anything you can push through anything." -- Precious Freeman, Executive Director

Thursday's kickoff event is the first of many.

February 1 -- Kickoff Event
February 2-4 -- Story Time and Book Fair
February 10 -- Family Tour and Activity Day
