(AL.com) — An Alabama Senate poll released late Tuesday afternoon indicates that Democrat Doug Jones and Republican Roy Moore are tied.

It's perhaps a stunning development given the state's recent overwhelming Republican lean as well as three previous Senate polls have indicated solid leads for Moore.

Fox News conducted the poll.

"This race exemplifies the difficulty the Republican Party has now," Republican pollster Daron Shaw, who conducts the Fox News Poll with Democrat Chris Anderson, said in the poll story on the Fox News website.

The poll had both Jones and Moore with 42 percent support from participants while 11 percent of those surveyed declared themselves to be undecided.

That broke down to poll participants voting 39 percent for each candidate if they had to vote today. A follow-up question asking which way a participant might be leaning garnered each candidate another 3 percent of support.

The poll was conducted Oct. 14-16 with live interviews of 801 voters. Of the 801 participants, 372 were reached by landline and 429 by cell phone. The poll's margin of error was 3.5 percent.
