DOTHAN, Al. (WTVY) -- A former Dothan police officer will be freed from prison after the Alabama Parole Board approved his release.
Lanice Bonds, 40, is serving 10 years for having sexual intercourse with a 17-year old student while he worked as a resource officer at Dothan High School. He pleaded guilty in 2014.
During a hearing Wednesday in Montgomery, Bonds mother testified on his behalf.
However, Houston County District Attorney Pat Jones opposed parole as did victims’ rights group VOCAL and the state attorney general’s office.
In Alabama, it is illegal for a school employee to have sex with a student under 19. However, a Morgan County judge last year ruled the law vague and unconstitutional. The state is appealing the ruling.
Bonds will be released from prison in a few weeks.
