Dothan (WTVY)-- Five finalists for Dothan school superintendent are expected to be named on October 30 although the date is not set in stone.
After discussing the possibility of reopening the application window that closed September 30, the board decided Thursday to only consider 23 people who applied by the deadline—for now.
“If we feel we have great candidates we’ll move forward with interviews. If we don’t have a consensus of the board on candidates we’ll ask for an extension,” said newly-elected Chairman Mike Schmitz.
The board is under a November 28 state mandated deadline to have a new superintendent hired. Schmitz believes, if more applicants are sought, the deadline can be extended. A request to do so must come from the board and be approved by Interim State School Superintendent Dr. Ed Richardson.
While options for seeking additional applicants remain open Schmitz believes that somebody will likely be selected from the current pool.
The choice, once made, will replace Dr. Chuck Ledbetter who resigned in May to take a similar position in Pike Road, Alabama.
When the finalists are decided on their names will be made public.
