DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - There are 23 million acres of timberland in Alabama.
That accounts for 69 percent of the state's total land area.
For Arbor Day, Dothan held a ceremony recognizing the role trees play in our environment.

This is the 27th year Dothan has held the title of Tree City USA.
The tree city program provides the seedlings for communities to manage and expand their public green space.
Thursday, a live oak was planted at the wiregrass museum of art to honor fine arts in the community.

Dan Williams, City of Dothan Horticulturist says:
"To recognize the fact that trees are important in our community…we have tree ordinances to proliferate the trees in our community and help the environment overall."

The first Arbor Day was held in Nebraska in 1872.
