Dothan breaks ground on solar research project

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) — The city of Dothan broke ground on a new solar project on Thursday.

It's a joint effort between the city and the Alabama Municipal Authority.

Once finished, there will be about 160 solar panels at Westgate Park.

These panels are just for research at this time.

City leaders say solar is a more economical choice and will provide long term financial benefits.

City Commissioner Albert Kirkland says,
"The sun cost us no money to generate electricity, I think it is very important and I am fully supportive and we want to see what the future holds and how it works in south Alabama."

The solar panels will be ready by October.
