Dothan Police welcome their newest K-9

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) — The Dothan Police Department is proud to welcome their newest K-9 to their team.

Xander is from Holland and has only been in the US for 2 weeks.

The 2 year old German shepherd is trained in patrol and narcotics which means he can smell the four drugs that police look for and he knows how to track criminals and others.

He is going through a bonding period with his handler right now and has a few months of training ahead of him.

Lt. Rachel David says,
"He has been checked out by our vet that we use and is in great physical condition and ready to go to work. Our dogs are on duty 24 hours a day, they work 12 hour shifts with their handlers and stay with their handler and quickly become a part of the family so we are excited about Xander's career."

It will likely be January before Xander is ready to go.
