Dothan Fire Department given ISO Class 1 ranking

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -- A top rating for the city of Dothan Fire Department.

The Insurance Services Office (ISO), awarded it a class 1 rating, ranking it among the top 1% of fire departments nationwide and one of only 10 in Alabama.

This rating considers 3 main areas. The 911 call center, the fire department and water supply.

In addition, it recognizes community efforts to reduce losses through fire prevention, public fire safety education and fire investigation.

The rating is used by insurance companies to determine insurance rates for homeowners.

The better the rating, the lower the homeowner premium. In a statement, Fire Chief Larry Williams praised the department, saying its "... a tremendous achievement for our workforce and our citizens"

Dothan Mayor, Mark Saliba says "It's great when our city, once again, has proven that we are continuing to do, what we're here to do and that is to provide services here for all of our citizens. It's the city coming together again to provide the best service that it can."

The ISO reviewed 46,000 departments. The rating takes effect April 1st.
