Dale County cell phone bills draw attention from auditors

DOTHAN, AL (WTVY) A cell phone policy—or lack of one—has attracted the attention of auditors reviewing Dale County’s books.

According to a story in The Southeast Sun, at issue are itemized Verizon cell phone bills from the Dale County Sheriff’s Department.

Auditors have uncovered at least two Sheriff’s Office retirees have cell phones being paid for by the county. Audit reports also show some Sheriff’s Office clerical staff have county-financed cell phones and iPads.

Currently, Dale County spends about $53,000 on cell phones and mobile devices annually.

To help cut cost, Dale County Commission Chairman Mark Blankenship presented commissioners with a new mobile device policy last month.

He says a new policy could generate about a 50% savings on the county's cell phone bills.
