City employees could make more than minimum wage

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - More money for some Dothan city employees! The city commission approved a plan that could pay new hires more than minimum wage.

The proposed change to Section 12 of the Civil Service Act would allow the city manager to approve hiring, upon the recommendation of the personnel director.

This provision allows pay consideration to be given for new classified employees who has experience and education above what the minimum pay is in a pay range assigned to that position.

Currently, the recommendation comes from the personnel director to the governing body for an employee with exceptional qualifications to be approved to be hired above the starting pay. The resolution that was approved Tuesday would give direction to the state delegation to make this change to the Dothan Civil Service Act, which is a state law.

"We think this will allow the city to continue to recruit and identify respective employees to come and work for the city,” said personnel director Delvick McKay.
