Jackson Co. Board approves ordinance banning injection wells

JACKSON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) — Jackson County commissioners approved an ordinance banning injection wells.

The Tuesday night vote came after several different readings of the ordinance since July.

The ordinance bans all injection wells, not just deep injection wells.

County Attorney Michelle Jordan said the ordinance will ban the discharge of prohibited substances at any depth.

County leaders met with Senator George Gainer and Waste Management officials last week to discuss alternatives to the possible deep injection well at the Springhill Landfill in Campbellton.

Jackson County NAACP President Ronstance Pittman said they're optimistic about what they've heard so far.

"We're involved in meetings with other entities involved and we're excited about just trying to figure out something that better suits the county than an injection well," Pittman said.
