Ashford mayor announces resignation one year into second term

Ashford (WTVY)-- Ashford Mayor Jonathan Grecu plans to resign December 31. During Monday night’s council meeting Grecu’s resignation letter was read to the council.

While he cited the need to spend more time with family, Grecu and council members had been at odds for months. He claimed the council, in June, voted to grant itself authority over city offices and determine salaries. Grecu argued the ordinance violated state law.

However, Houston County Circuit Judge Butch Binford ruled that Grecu’s lawsuit lacked “material fact” and dismissed it.

A special election to fill the mayor’s position will be held in early 2018. A date hasn’t yet been set.
