Officials Urge Residents to "Get Ten"

It's that time of year again; time to get your water jugs, medications and food prepared for hurricane season.

“When we don't have anything happen for a while, we have been lucky; we hadn't had anything really major. People do get complacent and I can understand that because I do it myself,” said Dale County EMA Director, Robert Marsh.

Marsh was among more than a dozen area officials during a quarterly public health meeting in Dale County.

While no major storms have hit the Wiregrass in recent years, health officials like Cyndi Tereszkiewicz says you still need to be prepared.

“Plan ahead, get your kits together and rotate your supplies because we're talking about the basis needs like water, a gallon of water per person per day. Don’t forget about your animals, a lot of times people forget about their cats and their dogs but they've got to have water as well to drink," said Tereszkiewicz.

Other items to pack are a weather radio, clothing and personal items.

Tereszkiewicz says while these seminars are helpful, the often minimal attendance could soon make it obsolete.

“Bascially with all the cutbacks the state is having, if we can't justify having the meetings we can't have the meetings,” said Tereszkiewicz.

Residents like Russell Thompson are taking advantage of the meeting.

He says Thursday’s class will better prepare him in the event of a disaster.

“It helps me a lot because there is more training that I don't know, I didn't know, more training,” said Thompson.

These classes are open to the public.

Officials say one of the most important parts of the meeting is to get to know others in the community.

Tereszkiewicz says it helps knowing one another when you're trying to work together during a disaster.
