Forecasters with the National Hurricane Center are closely watching a tropical disturbance in the Atlantic that could become a new Tropical Depression or Tropical Storm.
This area of showers and thunderstorms is part of a system that is just under a thousand miles to the west of the Cape Verde Islands.
As of 8pm Eastern Time, the Hurricane Center has given the storm an 80% chance of becoming a Tropical Depression or Storm over the next 48 hours. This is considered a high, or “code red” probability of tropical cyclone formation.
Forecasters also say that conditions are expected to improve in that area, thus allowing the storm to possibly gain strength.
It is currently moving to the northwest between 10 to 15 miles per hour. At this time, many computer models have the storm recurving back into the Atlantic.
