Hurricane season doesn't start for a couple weeks, but state and federal officials are urging Florida residents to get ready now.

The heads of the National Hurricane Center and the Federal Emergency Agency will bring their preparedness message Wednesday to the annual Governor's Hurricane Conference in Fort Lauderdale.

Gov. Rick Scott and the director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management also will address the conference Wednesday. So will Lt. Col. Jerome Hatfield of the New Jersey State Police.

Emergency management officials are meeting in Fort Lauderdale this week to prepare for the upcoming storm season and to discuss the lessons learned last year from Superstorm Sandy.

The six-month Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1.
