Baptists providing hot meals for hurricane victims

ATLANTA (AP) - Hundreds of Southern Baptist volunteers are working with the Salvation Army and Red Cross as the Houston-Galveston area struggles to recover from Hurricane Ike.

Mike Ebert of Southern Baptist Disaster Relief says his group has been asked to provide 500,000 hot meals a day to evacuees and emergency crews.

Ebert says each of the more than 100 Southern Baptist teams includes a chaplain to provide counseling and meet the spiritual needs of hurricane victims who may be suffering through a life-changing crisis.

Also working to meet both physical and spiritual needs are volunteers from Samaritan's Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
