Hurricane Ike is expected to impact Walton County’s shoreline during the next 48 hours.

According to Ed Baltzley, Walton County’s Emergency Response Director, the county is under a coastal flood watch, and shoreline residents may see a ten to twelve foot surf, moderate beach erosion and surges up to three feet during the next two days.

“We don’t expect to see any major winds in our area as Hurricane Ike passes through the Gulf of Mexico,” says Ed Baltzley, “and it’s unlikely that we will see any major rainfall.

However, residents should never let their guard down on any storm prediction, since storms have a history of changing course at the very last minute.

Continue to monitor this storm through local news and our website at www.co.walton.fl.us.”

Double red flags are currently flying over Walton County’s beaches indicating that the waters are closed to swimmers.

For updates on swimming conditions, log on to the South Walton Fire District’s website at www.swfd.org.
