Global Warming Champion Rebuked By Supervisor

Posted: 01/28/2009 - Washington DC: NASA warming scientist James Hansen, one of former Vice-President Al Gore's closest allies in the promotion of man-made global warming fears, is being publicly rebuked by his former supervisor at NASA. John S. Theon, the former supervisor of James Hansen, NASA’s vocal man-made global warming fear soothsayer, has now publicly declared himself a skeptic and declared that Hansen “embarrassed NASA” with his alarming climate claims and said Hansen was “was never muzzled.” “I appreciate the opportunity to add my name to those who disagree that global warming is man made,” Theon declared “climate models are useless.” “My own belief concerning anthropogenic (manmade) climate change is that the models do not realistically simulate the climate system because there are many very important sub-grid scale processes that the models either replicate poorly or completely omit,” “Furthermore, some scientists have manipulated the observed data to justify their model results. In doing so, they neither explain what they have modified in the observations, nor explain how they did it. They have resisted making their work transparent so that it can be replicated independently by other scientists. This is clearly contrary to how science should be done. Thus there is no rational justification for using climate model forecasts to determine public policy”

Cold Alaska - NOT Global Warming

Updated: 01/28/2009 - The climate of Alaska has changed considerably over the past 50-plus years. However, human emissions of greenhouse gases are not the primary reason. Instead, the timing of the swings of a periodic, natural cycle - the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) - has made a strong imprint on the observed climate of Alaska since the mid-20th century.

No Longer A Warming Believer

Posted: 01/26/2009 - One year ago, I believed that man-made global warming was true, with temperatures rising dangerously due to increasing levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in our atmosphere. I also believed that a consensus of the international scientific community supported these conclusions. I based these beliefs on information from the popular press, television and political leaders. Then I began some real research on the topic. I quickly discovered three critical things: First, the Earth has experienced significant warming over the past 18,000 years that has nothing to do with human activity. Second, more recent temperature variations demonstrate that there is little or no correlation between levels of atmospheric CO2 and temperature. And third, there is no “consensus” among scientists on climate change. Once you look beyond the political beliefs of the man-made global warming or climate change movement, the scientific truth is that there is no evidence of a correlation between atmospheric temperatures and CO2 levels. While no correlation has been demonstrated between CO2 levels and temperature, early data do suggest a strong correlation between changes in surface activity on the sun (sunspots) and temperatures on Earth. So, it might be that the same forces that have guided the changes in Earth’s atmosphere for eternity are still at work and still beyond human control.

To Warm or Not To Warm

Posted: 01/26/2009 - Is Antarctica warming or cooling? Either way it proves global warming, according to climate modelers. In the 1990s, predictions of a greenhouse-warmed Antarctic abounded. As time passed, though, problems surfaced. Research paper after paper indicated that, other than the tiny Antarctica peninsula, the continent was in fact cooling—and had been doing so for many decades. Skeptics pointed to this as a flaw in global warming theory. Not so fast, cried the climate modelers. They quickly spun a number of possible explanations. Cooling was thus cast as proof of global warming, not refutation. But now a new paper has appeared, saying that Antarctica is warming after all. Written by Eric Steig and Drew Shindell, the paper purports to prove that past evidence of cooling was incorrect. But doesn’t that contradict the models? Not if one can again rewrite history. The real story here isn’t Antarctica. It’s the willingness to rationalize model results to fit any and all scenarios. To the modelers, their results are consistent with well, everything. Whether warmer or colder, flood or drought, more storms or less—it’s all proof that global warming is real and happening now. This, of course, isn’t real science. A true theory require something called falsifiability—a set of conditions under which it can be disproven. So far, this is something the modelers have failed to give.

CARBON DIOXIDE IS NOT THE BAD GUY

Updated: 02/03/2009 - Articles railing against carbon dioxide levels often display a few impressive scientific facts about the makeup of the earth's atmosphere and then proceed to make broad and unsupported statments. Instead, there has been NO global warming this decade, but there has been notable global cooling the last 2-3 years. The 'skeptics' are GROWING. Science demands debate, and anytime someone infers or says 'the debate is over' , then that person is woefully lacking in understanding how science works. The general media has done a terrible job of researching the global warming story. The earth's carbon dioxide levels have been shown (by ice cores, sediment studies) to have been much, much higher in the earth's recent geologic past (thousands of years) as well as the earth being warmer. The MOST IMPORTANT point is understanding science, specifically CAUSE AND EFFECT...warmer temperatures cause higher carbon dioxide levels, NOT the other way around - a HUGE difference. Natural cycles produce the wide variety of the earth's weather.

Is Carbon Dioxide a Greenhouse Gas?

Updated: 02/03/2009 - The ultimate source of energy for driving the atmospheric winds is the Sun. Of the energy from the Sun that reaches the top of the atmosphere, a little less than half is absorbed at the Earth’s surface, and another 30 percent is reflected back to space by the Earth’s surface, clouds, or air.

Global Warming Debate Shift

Posted: 01/21/2009 - Heartland Institute media monitors have noted on several occasions that climate-change alarmists are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain their position that human activity has warmed Earth to crisis proportions.Polar bears keep growing in numbers, Antarctic ice keeps expanding, deserts keep receding, temperatures keep easing, the ranks of science skeptics keep multiplying. It’s tough to scare people with that kind of sound-science evidence.

Good Historian..Poor Scientist

Updated: 01/21/2009 - NBC’s Presidential historian Beschloss today commentted as Presidents Bush and Obama crossed over the wooden bridge, that perhaps it was there because snow was more common on past Inauguration Days and that the lack of snow the last three inaugurations was a sign of global warming. The other reporters were speechless as most people were obviously feeling anything BUT global warming. Washington’s temperatures today ranged from 19F in the morning to 30F in the afternoon with wind chills running 10-15F sometimes lower. It ranked among the coldest inauguration days since the event was moved out of doors in 1817...the temperature this Inauguration Day averaged 9 degrees below normal. A few hundred miles to the south, a heavy snowstorm was raging in North Carolina even to the coast (3 inches at Kitty Hawk). Not a omen of global warming for sure.

Americans Doubt Global Warming Caused By Humans

Updated: 01/21/2009 - It appears a majority of Americans don’t buy the theory of anthropogenic (human caused) global warming. Rasmussen reports in his latest poll. Forty-four percent (44%) of U.S. voters now say long-term planetary trends are the cause of global warming, compared to 41% who blame it on human activity. Seven percent (7%) attribute global warming to some other reason, and nine percent (9%) are unsure in a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Numbers have been moving in the direction of planetary trends.

Global Warming Alarmists Desperate

Updated: 01/21/2009 - One of the most disturbing aspects of the global warming scam is the number of prominent people and entire segments of society bullied into silence. Entire segments of society have either remained silent or taken evasive action. Few had the courage to even ask for a full and open debate. Now everything is changing as the claims of warming are offset by the realities of cooling. Cold weather is doing more to raise questions about the scam of global warming than all the appeals to scientific reason. An increasing number of scientists are speaking out for a variety of reasons. The most likely reason is because the public is showing signs of disbelief in the entire global warming claims. Consensus was a major argument throughout the debate even though it’s a meaningless argument in science. Consensus is not a scientific fact. It is important in politics, which underscores the political nature of the debate. U.S Government Atmospheric Scientist Stanley B. Goldenberg of the Hurricane Research Division of NOAA recently said, “It is a blatant lie put forth in the media that makes it seem there is only a fringe of scientists who don’t buy into anthropogenic (human caused) global warming.” It was a child who said the Emperor had no clothes because the adults were afraid to speak up. Now scientists of all political persuasions are speaking out. The bullying is over and the bullies are in a panic.

The Case for Global Cooling

Updated: 01/21/2009 - Growing recognition of a threat of climatic cooling is correct, because since the turn of the 21st century all real world, long-term climate indicators have turned downwards. Global atmospheric temperature reached a peak in 1998, has not warmed since 1995 and, has been cooling since 2002. Some people, still under the thrall of the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change’s disproved projections of warming, seem surprised by this cooling trend, even to the point of denying it. But why? Using several fundamentally different mathematical techniques and many different data sets, seven scientists all forecast that climatic cooling will occur during the first decades of the 21st century. Temperature records confirm that cooling is under way, the length and intensity of which remains unknown.

Climate Trouble for the Democrats

Updated: 01/21/2009 - Why have the labor unions not lobbied on behalf of its workers for a full public discussion of climate change. Secondly, why has the Democratic Party abandoned its base, the poor, minorities and workers in manufacturing, all of whom will be adversely impacted by punitive carbon policy. Any policy that further taxes U.S. manufactured goods will not only make the country less competitive internationally, but will destroy more jobs. Cap and trade policies, will in fact do just that. Cap and trade policy will also likely make the U.S. even less competitive with the rest of the world. Is it only the California political and technology elites that carry sway in the “change” rhetoric of the Obama Administration?

Inauguration Day Forecast

Posted: 01/19/2009 - Brisk and chilly but dry weather will greet the crowds that descend upon Washington, D.C., Tuesday for the 56th Presidential Inauguration. The temperatures on Inauguration Day will remain cool, but nowhere near the bitterly cold readings that gripped much of the East last week.

Carbon Bigfoot and Inconsistencies

Updated: 01/21/2009 - Among his many campaign pledges, the President-elect has made energy and environment policy a cornerstone of his campaign, promising American votes a “new chapter” in climate leadership while also calling on Americans to do their voluntary part benefit the environment. But the four-day festivities surrounding his upcoming Inauguration will produce enough carbon dioxide to make most environmentalists turn a sickly shade of green. Still developing nations such as China maintain much less stringent environmental standards than the United States, and businesses and populations living in these places will continue to emit at increasingly higher rates as their economies grow. The leakage of these emissions will effectively ensure that global greenhouse gas concentrations will not improve.

Coldest Snap in Years - All Time State Records Set?

Updated: 01/21/2009 - Bundle up. Temperatures in the upper Midwest were expected to the coldest in years Friday as chilly Arctic air spilled south from Canada. It was -44F in Bismarck, ND Thursday. Rochelle, IL reached -38F Thursday and -36F today. That would be a new state record for IL, beating out the -36F set in 1999 in Congerville. In New England, Maine was coldest in Aroostook County where it reached -44F at Clayton Lake, -48F at Ninemile Bridge and -50F at Big Black River, the last two USGS stations. -50F would be the new All-Time State Record Low for Maine, beating out Van Buren’s -48F set in 1925. It would also tie the coldest ever for all of New England set in Bloomfield, Vermont in December 1933.

Global Warming Gloom and Doom Haven’t Occurred

Updated: 01/21/2009 - For more than 20 years, we have been hearing doomsday predictions about global warming’s effects on Kansas and across the world. Locally, during the hot Kansas summer of 2006, forecasts were issued and media articles written tying that hot, dry weather to global warming, and forecasting more extreme heat in the future. More drought? The reality: 2007 and 2008 were the two wettest years in the history of Wichita. No area of Kansas is experiencing drought at the present time, in spite of all that hand-wringing just two years ago. Extreme heat? The reality: The past two years, combined, had 21 fewer days than average with 90-degree or higher temperatures. Since 1990, there has been a downward trend in 100-degree or warmer temperatures in Wichita.

Questions for Obama’s Science Guy

Updated: 01/21/2009 - In nominating John Holdren to be director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy - the position known informally as White House science adviser - President-elect Barack Obama has enlisted an undisputed Big Name among academic environmentalists. He is also a doom-and-gloomer with a trail of erroneous apocalyptic forecasts dating back nearly 40 years - and a decided lack of tolerance for environmental opinions that conflict with his.
