Tornado Confirmed in Mobile

A tornado hit some areas of downtown Mobile Tuesday, causing severe damage in the area before moving north.

WALA-TV posted a photo of a large funnel cloud forming in the distance Tuesday evening.

Mobile Fire-Rescue officials tweeted that Murphy High School in downtown was damaged and that crews were going door-to-door in the hardest hit areas to check for injuries. No injuries were immediately confirmed hours after the funnel cloud was spotted. Officials also tweeted that power lines and tree limbs were down, and crews were responding to a gas leak at an apartment building.

Nancy Johnson, a spokeswoman for the Mobile County Commission, said a twister or high winds damaged homes and knocked down power lines and large tree limbs in an area just west of downtown around nightfall.
