Georgia Power says it is working to restore electricity to more than 7,500 homes and businesses, mostly in the Atlanta area, after strong storms roared through the state.
The utility said on Twitter late Tuesday night that 7,000 of the 7,600 outages statewide are in metro Atlanta.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that 14,800 customers were without electricity at around 9:30 p.m. The newspaper reported that heavy downpours, lightning and strong winds downed trees and power lines and led to major flight delays at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
The National Weather Service is predicting showers and thunderstorms in metro Atlanta each of the next five days, through Sunday.
