Hurricane Emilia Weakens Over Open Pacific

Hurricane Emilia and Tropical Storm Daniel are weakening over the open Pacific and remaining far from land.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said late Tuesday that Emilia had maximum sustained winds of 110 mph (177 kph) and was 695 miles (1118 kilometers) south-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California. It was moving west-northwest at 12 mph (19 kph). It's now a Category 2 storm and expected to weaken further over the next two days.

Farther west in the Pacific, Daniel has weakened to a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (64 kph). Daniel is centered about 1145 miles (1843 kilometers) east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii, and is moving westward near 17 mph (27 kph).

Daniel is expected to become a post tropical storm later Wednesday.
