MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- All of Alabama's interstate highways are open as the state continues digging out from the winter storm.

A spokesman for the Alabama Department of Transportation says work crews treated interstates in the Birmingham area to keep them from refreezing before rush hour Thursday.

While conditions are rapidly improving, officials are still urging drivers to be extremely cautious and to be on the lookout for icy patches.

Some state routes are still closed, and many side streets have slick spots.

The Transportation Department says cars that were left abandoned on Birmingham-area highways are being towed to the shoulder and to nearby parking lots. Troopers are helping clear roads.

Temperatures are predicted to rise above freezing later in the day, helping melt the remaining ice. But more freezing temperatures are expected overnight.
