Parts of Alabama are under a Winter Storm Warning for Thursday due to the potential of accumulating snow.
The National Weather Service has placed much of north and central Alabama under a Winter Storm Warning from 5 am Thursday through 7 in the evening. Some of the communities under the warning include, but aren’t limited to: Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Clanton, Anniston, Gadsden, Jasper and surrounding communities. Some counties further to the south are under a Winter Weather Advisory.
Forecasters currently expect the snow to start in the western counties of North and Central Alabama between 5am to 9am and then progress slowly westward through the late morning to afternoon hours.
The greatest potential for accumulating snow exists in northeastern Alabama, where places such as Anniston and Gadsden could see 2 to 4 inches, especially on grassy surfaces, bridges, and overpasses. Cities like Birmingham and Tuscaloosa could see 1 to 3 inches, while Selma and Prattville could see up to an inch. A trace of snow is possible as far south as Montgomery and Auburn.
These estimates, however, are not concrete and heavy bursts of snow are possible anywhere in that area.
From Troy southward, all of today’s precipitation is currently expected to fall in the form of the rain. No winter weather threat is expected in the Wiregrass.
