WASHINGTON (AP) - How hot is it? Hot enough for a big ape to
want A-C. The animals at the National Zoo in Washington needed
relief from the heat as temperatures hit the triple digits
yesterday. Zoo keepers gave homemade frozen fruit popsicles to the
pandas and other creatures. Even the apes took a break in their
air-conditioned indoor enclosures. Amanda Bania is the zoo's great
ape keeper. She says even though their species are from the
tropics, the apes are used to having access to A-C. Other animals
sought refuge in shady spots.
